I was blown away by the Great Wooden Trio at the Mariposa Folk Festival. The Great Wooden Trio is actually has 4 members, an acoustic folk trio accompanied by a storyteller. One of their two songwriters, Kevin Morse and I talked about songwriting and passed around my Ron Belanger crafted guitar in my favorite baseball dugout.

Ken Whiteley is an iconic Canadian roots music performer who is known for his versatility. He is sought after as a songwriter, performer, producer and side musician. He is adept in folk, blues, gospel, country, jazz and children’s music. We sat down and shared a few stories and passed around my Ron Belanger crafted guitar at the Mariposa Folk Festival. Ken also shared about his good friend, Jackie Washington who had passed on just a week earlier.

My guest today is a household name to 2 generations of Canadians. Fred Penner is a children’s entertainer who had a long running program on CBC television throughout the 80s and 90s called Fred Penner’s Place. His music has been a strong influence upon me and many other children’s performers. I sat down with Fred in my friend, luthier Ron Belanger’s booth at the Mariposa Folk Festival. You can hear a quite a bit of the vibe from the festival and the other vendors in the background. It was an absolute thrill having Fred jam along to For the Sake of the Song. You can find his music at fredpenner.com or at Casablanca Kids,

Michelle Rumball has been a fixture of the Toronto Music scene for almost 20 years. In the early 90s she was lead singer for folk-rock legends, The Grevious Angels. She now writes and performs as a solo singer-songwriter, as a member of the new trio Beauty Saloon, and in a number of bands around Toronto. I caught up to her at the wonderful Rockin’ The Cradle series of concerts promoted by my sister as a venue for people who love music with babies and young children.

Taylor Davison is a high school student and songwriter. We had a chat on the Sunday morning of our our songwriting group’s winter getaway weekend. My apologies if I sound tired. It was a music filled weekend.
